The Atelier Take

Worth its fee for a business that flies often and would pay Dell, Indeed, Adobe or OpenAI anyway; as an everyday earner it is ordinary.

Who it suits

Owners who fly several times a year, value lounge access and are happy to book flights and hotels through Amex Travel. Strongest for businesses already spending at Dell, Indeed, Adobe or on ChatGPT Business.

Who should skip it

Businesses whose spending is mostly advertising, dining or everyday purchases: the Business Gold earns 4x in its top two categories for $375. Also anyone who books flights directly with airlines, which earns 1x here.

Every credit, and the catch

Nine credits with a face value of $3,399 a year, plus a Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credit every four years. Most need enrollment, several are paid monthly or quarterly, and unused amounts do not roll over. Two more unlock the following year after $250,000 of spending in a calendar year.

Dell Technologies credit

Up to $1,150 a year

How often: Up to $150 a calendar year, plus $1,000 once $5,000 is spent with DellEnrollment: Yes

U.S. purchases directly with Dell only. The $1,000 part needs $5,000 of Dell purchases on the card in the same calendar year.

Hotel credit

Up to $600 a year

How often: $300 January to June, $300 July to DecemberEnrollment: No

Only prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts or The Hotel Collection bookings through Amex Travel count, and The Hotel Collection needs a two-night stay. These rates can be higher than booking the hotel directly.

Indeed credit

Up to $360 a year

How often: $90 a quarterEnrollment: Yes

Only purchases made directly with Indeed in the U.S. Each quarter’s $90 is lost if unused.

ChatGPT Business credit

Up to $300 a year

How often: Once a calendar yearEnrollment: Yes

ChatGPT Business bought directly from OpenAI in the U.S. only; the subscription renews automatically.

Adobe credit

Up to $250 a year

How often: Once a calendar yearEnrollment: Yes

Paid only after $600 of U.S. purchases directly with Adobe in the calendar year.

CLEAR+ credit

Up to $219 a year

How often: Once a calendar yearEnrollment: No, pay for CLEAR+ with the card

Only worth something to people who would pay for CLEAR+ anyway.

Hilton credit

Up to $200 a year

How often: $50 a quarterEnrollment: Yes

Charges made directly with a Hilton property, including incidentals billed to the room. Bookings through travel websites do not count, and enrolling creates a Hilton for Business account.

Airline fee credit

Up to $200 a year

How often: Once a calendar yearEnrollment: Yes, choose one airline

Covers incidental fees such as checked bags on the one chosen airline. Airfare, upgrades and miles do not count.

Wireless credit

Up to $120 a year

How often: $10 a monthEnrollment: Yes

Monthly service bills paid directly to a U.S. wireless carrier; phones, Google Fi and resellers are excluded. An unused month is lost.

Global Entry or TSA PreCheck

$120 every 4 years

How often: Every four yearsEnrollment: No, pay the application fee with the card

Up to $120 for Global Entry or up to $85 for TSA PreCheck, whichever is paid for first.

Amex Travel flight credit

Up to $1,200 the following year

How often: Once, the calendar year after qualifyingEnrollment: No

Only after $250,000 of eligible purchases in a calendar year, and only on flights booked on AmexTravel.com or the Amex Travel App the next year.

One AP credit

Up to $2,400 the following year

How often: Once, the calendar year after qualifyingEnrollment: No

Also needs $250,000 of spending in a calendar year, and only covers fees for Amex’s One AP supplier-payment service.

What it earns

The 35% Airline Bonus gives back 35% of the points used with Pay with Points on flights with the chosen airline, a redemption benefit rather than earning. Transfers to U.S. airlines carry a fee of $0.0006 a point, capped at $99.

Not counted: lounge access, hotel and car rental status, the 35% Airline Bonus and the insurance. 2x applies to the first $2 million of 2x purchases a year. Transfers to U.S. airlines carry a fee of $0.0006 a point, capped at $99, not deducted here.

Trip cancellation and interruption

Up to $10,000 per trip and $20,000 per card per 12 months, for covered reasons such as illness or severe weather. Secondary.

Car rental loss and damage

Up to $75,000 for theft or damage to a rental car, for rentals up to 30 days, when the rental company’s damage waiver is declined. Not available in Australia, Italy or New Zealand, and no liability cover. Secondary.

Baggage insurance

Up to $2,000 for checked bags and $3,000 for carry-on bags, with a $3,000 total per person per trip; high-risk items are limited to $1,000. Secondary.

Cell phone protection

Up to $800 per claim for theft or damage, after a $50 deductible, for up to 2 claims per 12 months. The previous month’s wireless bill must be paid with the card. Secondary.

Purchase protection

Theft or accidental damage within 90 days of purchase: up to $10,000 per item and $50,000 a year.

Extended warranty

Adds up to one year to manufacturer warranties of five years or less: up to $10,000 per item and $50,000 a year.

Return protection

If a store won’t take back an eligible item within 90 days, Amex may refund up to $300 per item and $1,000 a year.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Lounge access is among the broadest of any business card: Centurion, Priority Pass, Delta Sky Club and more
  • 5x on flights and prepaid hotels booked through Amex Travel
  • 2x on electronics, software, shipping, construction suppliers and purchases of $5,000 or more, up to $2 million a year
  • Strong insurance, including $500 trip delay cover after 6 hours and cell phone protection

Cons

  • The $895 fee only pays off if several business-specific credits match spending already planned
  • Flights booked directly with airlines earn 1x, unlike the personal Platinum
  • 1x on dining, gas, advertising and most everyday spending
  • Credits need enrollment and are split monthly, quarterly or twice a year

Card terms change often and some offers are personalized; the issuer’s page is the final word.
