American AAdvantage, explained

The last of the big three U.S. programs with a published partner award chart. How AAdvantage works in 2026, the oneworld seats worth booking, the Citi cards, and status by Loyalty Points.

American prices its own flights dynamically, like United and Delta. The difference is what it kept: a published chart for flights on its oneworld and other partners, including Japan Airlines, Qatar Airways and Cathay Pacific. That chart is why AAdvantage miles carry a typical value of about 1.45¢ each, the highest of the three big U.S. airlines, and why a Citi card that transfers to American has become one of the more useful cards to hold.

Northern South America

South America Region 1

30,000miles one-way in business

Business class to northern South America for little more than a domestic business award.

Hawaii

Free cancellation

American says there are no change fees on award tickets, and miles are redeposited at no charge if canceled before the first flight, within a year of purchase. Holding a good partner award while plans settle costs nothing.

How to earn AAdvantage miles

  1. Transfer from Citi

Citi is the only major bank that transfers to American: 1:1 from the Strata Premier and Strata Elite, about 1:0.7 from Citi’s no-fee cards. Citi names American Airlines as a partner on its own card pages.

  2. Use an AAdvantage card

Every AAdvantage card is now issued by Citi, which became the exclusive issuer in 2026, according to American. Card spending also earns Loyalty Points toward status.

  3. Fly

Miles on American depend on fare and status; Basic Economy no longer earns miles.

  4. Marriott

3:1, with no bonus for American, according to Marriott.

Miles expire after 24 months without activity, according to American’s terms; earning on an AAdvantage card counts as activity.

Where it shines

  • A published partner chart, rare among U.S. airlines
  • Excellent partners in business class: JAL, Qatar, Cathay Pacific
  • Free cancellation on awards
  • Status from card spending via Loyalty Points

Where it falls short

  • Only Citi transfers in at full value
  • American’s own flights are priced dynamically
  • Surcharges on some partners, notably British Airways

The Atelier Take

For Japan, the Middle East and Asia in business class, few U.S. programs match AAdvantage’s partner chart; a Citi Strata card is the key that opens it.
