The Atelier Take

A sensible card for a small team that flies American domestically, kept mainly for the free bags and the Loyalty Points.

Who it suits

Small businesses whose owner and staff fly American domestically and check bags. Every cardholder earns Loyalty Points toward status on their own spending, while the miles pool in the company account.

Who should skip it

Businesses that rarely fly American, or fly it mostly internationally, since the bag benefit is domestic only. Also anyone who wants lounge access: there is none.

Every credit, and the catch

There are no statement credits for travel or business spending. The recurring benefits are a companion certificate tied to $30,000 of spending and 25% back on inflight purchases.

Everything else

TPG values AAdvantage miles at 1.45¢ each, so 2x returns about 2.9¢ per dollar. Miles go to the company’s AAdvantage Business account, which can pass them to registered travelers; each cardholder also earns 1 Loyalty Point per $1 toward AAdvantage status. AAdvantage miles do not transfer to other programs.

Will the $99 fee pay off?

Enter what would go on this card. The result values points at TPG’s valuation, adds the credits that would actually be used and, in year one, the welcome offer, then sets the total against a no-fee card that pays 2% back on everything.
