The Atelier Take

If Amazon is a weekly habit, this is the card for that habit and nothing else.

Who it suits

Prime households that buy a meaningful amount on Amazon or at Whole Foods.

Who should skip it

Anyone without Prime (the rate falls to 3%), or anyone looking for travel points: rewards here are cash only.

What it earns

Rewards: Amazon rewards points, worth 1¢ each at Amazon or as cash back.

5%

Amazon.com, Audible, Whole Foods Market and Chase Travel

With an eligible Prime membership

10%+

Rotating Amazon items and categories

Limited-time Prime Card Bonus offers

2%

Gas stations, restaurants, local transit and commuting

Rideshare included

1%

Everything else

Rewards are cash-equivalent: 1 point is worth 1¢ at Amazon checkout, as cash back or toward travel. They do not transfer to airlines or hotels.

Other benefits

Redeem at Amazon

Rewards can be used at checkout as soon as the day after they are earned.

No foreign transaction fees

Unusual among store cards.

What it is worth

No annual card fee, though the 5% rate needs Prime. On $3,000 a year at Amazon and Whole Foods, 5% returns $150, against $60 on a flat 2% card.

Outside Amazon it is ordinary: 2% at restaurants and gas stations, 1% elsewhere.

Insurance and protections

Chase lists these on the card’s page; the Guide to Benefits has the full terms. Pay for the trip or purchase with the card to be covered.

Purchase protection

Damage or theft within 120 days of purchase, up to $500 per item.

Extended warranty

Adds one year to U.S. manufacturer warranties of three years or less.

Lost luggage

Up to $3,000 per traveler for lost, damaged or stolen bags.

Baggage delay

Up to $100 a day for 3 days for essentials when bags are delayed more than 6 hours.

Travel accident insurance

Up to $500,000 when the fare is paid with the card.

Auto rental coverage

Theft and collision damage on most rentals; secondary to personal insurance in the U.S.

Roadside assistance

A dispatch service; the call-out fee is billed to the card.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • 5% back at Amazon and Whole Foods with no card fee
  • 2% at restaurants, gas stations and on transit
  • Instant $150 gift card on approval
  • No foreign transaction fees and solid travel protection for a no-fee card

Cons

  • Rewards are cash, not transferable points
  • Only worth it with a Prime membership
  • Weak outside Amazon

Card terms change often and some offers are personalized; the issuer’s page is the final word.
