The Atelier Take

Easy, but a 2% card does the same job better.

Who it suits

People who want one simple no-fee card, including for travel abroad.

Who should skip it

Anyone happy to use a flat 2% card instead: on $2,000 a month, the difference is $120 a year.

What it earns

Rewards: cash back, which can also be converted to miles when paired with a Venture or Venture X card.

5%

Hotels, vacation rentals and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel

5%

Capital One Entertainment tickets

1.5%

Everything else

No caps or categories

Rewards are cash back that never expires and can be redeemed for any amount, as a check, statement credit or gift cards. Held alongside a Venture or Venture X, they can be moved to that account as miles.

Other benefits

Hertz Five Star status

A free status upgrade with Hertz.

Redeem at Amazon or PayPal

Rewards can pay for Amazon.com and eligible PayPal purchases.

Complimentary concierge

24-hour help with dining, entertainment and travel.

What it is worth

No annual fee, so nothing to earn back. On $2,000 a month, 1.5% returns $360 a year, against $480 on a flat 2% card.

Its strengths are simplicity, no foreign transaction fees and a 15-month 0% intro APR.

Insurance and protections

Capital One lists these protections on the card’s page; limits depend on the card’s network tier and are set out in the Guide to Benefits sent with the card. There is no trip delay, trip cancellation or cell phone cover listed.

Extended warranty

Additional warranty protection on eligible items bought with the card.

Travel accident insurance

Automatic cover when the fare is paid with the card.

24-hour travel assistance

Emergency card replacement and cash advance if the card is lost or stolen.
