Marriott Bonvoy, explained

One of the largest hotel programs in the world, with points that are easy to earn and easy to waste. How pricing and certificates work in 2026, all six Marriott cards, and where Bonvoy points beat cash.

Marriott Bonvoy spans thousands of hotels, from roadside Courtyards to the St. Regis in the Maldives, with many ways to earn: six credit cards, three banks that transfer in, and partners from Uber to Hertz. What it lacks is predictability. There is no award chart, prices rise without announcement, and the same 100,000 points can be worth ten times more at one hotel than at another. Used selectively, it is a strong program; used by default, it quietly leaks value.

How award prices work

Marriott’s terms say the points price of a night varies by hotel, room type and date, and is "updated continuously". There is no published chart. Prices can rise at any hotel without notice.

  1. Standard awards

A standard room for points, at the price shown on marriott.com. Marriott advertises stays from 12,000 points a night.

  2. Stay for 5, Pay for 4

On a points-only stay of five nights or more, the cheapest night is free, according to Marriott’s terms. It does not apply to certificates or Cash + Points.

  3. Cash + Points

Part points, part cash, at participating hotels; prices vary by hotel and date.

  4. Premium rooms

Available at a higher points price; rarely good value.

The test that matters at Marriott

Before booking any Marriott award, divide the cash price by the points. Below a typical 0.75¢ a point, pay cash and save the points. The range is extreme: at some hotels on some dates, the points price works out to a small fraction of a cent per point.

Free Night Awards and the 25,000-point top-up

Marriott’s certificates carry a points value: 35,000, 50,000 or 85,000, depending on the card. Marriott’s terms let members add up to 25,000 of their own points to a certificate so each reaches much further than its face value.

Certificates are for standard rooms only, expire on the date shown in the account, cannot be used at Homes & Villas or on the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, and do not count toward Stay for 5, Pay for 4. Any value left over is lost.

How to earn Marriott points

  1. Transfer from a bank

American Express and Chase at 1:1, and Bilt at 1:1 according to Marriott’s own terms. At typical values, a transfer turns a bank point worth about 2¢ into a Marriott point worth about 0.75¢, so transfer only for a specific booking, ideally during a bonus.

  2. Stay

10 points per dollar at most brands (5 at Residence Inn, TownePlace Suites, Element and a few others), plus 10–75% for elite members.

  3. Use a Marriott card

From 1x–2x on everyday spending to 6x at Marriott hotels. At 0.75¢ a point, 2x is worth about 1.5¢ per dollar: less than a plain 2% card.

  4. Everyday partners

Uber rides, Hertz rentals and dining at Marriott hotels without staying.

Points expire after 24 months without earning or redeeming, according to Marriott’s terms; holding a Marriott card does not by itself prevent this, though points earned on the card count as activity.

Where Bonvoy points go furthest

Marriott’s best value is usually at luxury hotels in expensive places, where cash rates climb faster than points prices. Points prices at these hotels change by date, so search marriott.com with points for the exact dates before transferring, and compare against the cash rate.

Where it shines

  • A vast footprint, so points are usable almost anywhere
  • Stay for 5, Pay for 4 on points-only stays
  • Certificates that can be topped up by 25,000 points
  • Three banks transfer in, and points convert to more than 35 airlines

Where it falls short

  • No chart, and prices rise without notice
  • Points are worth about 0.75¢ each, so card earning on everyday spending lags a 2% card
  • Elite benefits at Gold are thin; breakfast and lounges start at Platinum
  • Wide gaps between good and terrible redemptions

The Atelier Take

Hold a Marriott card for the certificate, book five nights at a time, and always check cents per point; Bonvoy rewards discipline more than loyalty.
