The Atelier Take
Keep it for the anniversary free night and the 7% room rate; for most business spending, other cards earn more.
Who it suits
Business owners who stay at Marriott hotels and will use the annual free night at a hotel worth more than the fee. Its 15 Elite Night Credits stack with those from a personal Marriott Bonvoy card.
Who should skip it
Anyone who rarely stays at Marriott: Bonvoy points are among the lower-valued currencies, so 4x is worth about 3¢ per dollar and 2x about 1.5¢.
Every credit, and the catch
No statement credits: the value is in the free nights.
Annual Free Night Award
One night up to 35,000 points
Only at hotels costing up to 35,000 points a night, though up to 25,000 points can be added. Resort fees may apply, and it expires a year after issue.
Free Night Award after $60,000 of spending
One night up to 35,000 points
Only after $60,000 of purchases on the card in a calendar year; same rules as the annual night.
What it earns
Rewards: Marriott Bonvoy points, which go toward free nights at Marriott hotels or, through Marriott’s Air+Car program, toward flights and car rentals.
6x
Hotels participating in Marriott Bonvoy
Card points only; up to 10x as a Bonvoy member and 25% more as Gold Elite come with the stay
4x
Restaurants worldwide, U.S. gas stations, U.S. wireless phone service and U.S. shipping
Phone service bought directly from U.S. providers; no yearly cap
2x
Everything else
TPG values Bonvoy points at 0.75¢ each, so 6x returns about 4.5¢ per dollar, 4x about 3¢ and 2x about 1.5¢. Value per point varies widely by hotel and date.
Status and hotel benefits
Gold Elite status
Automatic while the card is open, including 25% bonus points on stays.
15 Elite Night Credits
Each calendar year, toward higher status. Only one Marriott business card’s credits count per member, but they stack with the credits from one personal Marriott Bonvoy card, whichever bank issues it.
7% off room rates
Book a standard room directly with Marriott at the Amex Business Card Rate: 7% off the flexible rate in total, including the member discount. Not with points, other discounts or 10 or more rooms.
Premium in-room internet
Free at participating Marriott hotels.
Will the $125 fee pay off?
Enter what would go on this card. The result values points at TPG’s valuation, adds the credits that would actually be used and, in year one, the welcome offer, then sets the total against a no-fee card that pays 2% back on everything.

The result
The anniversary free night arrives after each renewal, so it starts in year two; the second night counts once card spending reaches $60,000 in a calendar year. The example’s $200 of internet, cable and phone is split evenly between wireless phone service (4x) and internet and cable (2x). Not counted: the 7% room rate, Gold Elite status and the 15 Elite Night Credits.
Insurance and protections
Pay for the trip or purchase with the card to be covered. Travel cover is secondary: it pays after any other insurance. Amex’s Guides to Benefits have the full terms and exclusions.
Baggage insurance
Up to $1,250 for carry-on bags and $500 for checked bags, on top of what the carrier pays, when the whole fare is paid with the card. Secondary.
Car rental loss and damage
Up to $50,000 for theft or damage to a rental car, for rentals up to 30 days, when the rental company’s damage waiver is declined. Not available in Australia, Italy or New Zealand, and no liability cover. Secondary.
Purchase protection
Theft or accidental damage within 90 days of purchase: up to $1,000 per item and $50,000 a year.
Extended warranty
Adds up to one year to manufacturer warranties of five years or less: up to $10,000 per item and $50,000 a year.
