The Atelier Take
A sound everyday card for a Hilton-loyal business: 5x is worth about 2¢ a dollar at TPG’s value, and $40,000 a year buys Diamond status.
Who it suits
Businesses that put most spending on one card and stay at Hilton hotels. Gold status comes with the card, and $40,000 of spending in a calendar year earns Diamond.
Who should skip it
Anyone who won’t spend at a Hilton each quarter or doesn’t value Hilton status: points are worth about 0.4¢ each, so the large multipliers flatter.
Every credit, and the catch
One credit, paid out in quarterly pieces.
Hilton credit
Up to $240 a year
Purchases made directly with a property in the Hilton portfolio: bookings through a Hilton channel, or charges billed to the room and paid with the card at checkout. An unused quarter is lost.
What it earns
Rewards: Hilton Honors points.
12x
Hotels and resorts in the Hilton portfolio
Booked through Hilton or charged to the room; card points only, the base points from Hilton come with any card
5x
Everything else
On the first $100,000 of non-Hilton purchases each calendar year, then 3x
TPG values Hilton points at 0.4¢ each, the lowest of the major hotel currencies, so 12x is about 4.8¢ per dollar, 5x about 2¢ and 3x about 1.2¢.
Status and other benefits
Hilton Honors Gold status
While the card is open.
Diamond status
After $40,000 of purchases in a calendar year, for the rest of that year and the next.
National Emerald Club Executive
Car rental status, once enrolled through the Amex account.
Will the $195 fee pay off?
Enter what would go on this card. The result values points at TPG’s valuation, adds the credits that would actually be used and, in year one, the welcome offer, then sets the total against a no-fee card that pays 2% back on everything.
