The Atelier Take

Fine as a no-fee Hilton companion; not a daily card.

Who it suits

Occasional Hilton guests who want a no-fee card tied to the program, including for use abroad.

Who should skip it

Anyone after strong everyday rewards: at TPG’s 0.4¢ valuation, 3x is about 1.2% back.

What it earns

Rewards: Hilton Honors points.

Hotels and resorts in the Hilton portfolio

5x

3x

Everything else

TPG values Hilton points at 0.4¢ each, the lowest of the major hotel currencies, so the large multipliers flatter: 5x is about 2¢ per dollar.

Status and other benefits

Hilton Honors Silver status

A 20% bonus on base points. After $20,000 of purchases in a calendar year, Gold status through the end of the following year.

No foreign transaction fees

Rare on a no-fee card.

Amex ticket access and offers

Presale tickets and Amex Offers.

What it is worth

No annual fee, so nothing to earn back. The welcome offer is the main value: 70,000 points and a free night.

After that, it earns Hilton points at modest real value and keeps a Hilton account active. Silver status adds little.

Insurance and protections

Pay for the purchase or rental with the card to be covered. Car rental cover is secondary. Amex’s Guides to Benefits have the full terms.

Car rental loss and damage

Up to $50,000 for theft or damage to a rental car, for rentals up to 30 days, when the rental company’s damage waiver is declined. Secondary.

Purchase protection

Theft or accidental damage within 90 days of purchase: up to $1,000 per item and $50,000 a year.

Extended warranty

Adds up to one year to manufacturer warranties of five years or less: up to $10,000 per item and $50,000 a year.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • No fee and a generous current offer
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • Keeps Hilton points active

Cons

  • Hilton points are low in value
  • Silver status adds little
  • Better cards exist for everyday spending

Card terms change often and some offers are personalized; the issuer’s page is the final word.
