Delta SkyMiles, explained
No award chart, but some of the most forgiving award rules in the U.S. How SkyMiles works in 2026, where the miles still go far, every Delta Amex card, and the lounge rules that changed.
Delta prices awards by demand, with no chart, and its miles carry a typical value of about 1.2¢ each. What Delta offers instead is flexibility. Award tickets from the U.S. or Canada can be canceled with no fee (Basic fares excepted), miles never expire, and the Delta American Express cards add discounts, bags, companion tickets and, for some, lounge access.

How award prices work
Delta publishes no chart. Its site says award seats are capacity-controlled and that the calendar shows the lowest prices; partner awards on Air France, KLM, Korean Air, Virgin Atlantic and others can be booked on delta.com.
TakeOff 15
Delta SkyMiles Gold, Platinum and Reserve cardholders, personal and business, get 15% off Delta-operated award flights booked on delta.com or the Fly Delta app, according to Delta. It does not apply to partner flights or to taxes.
Free cancellation
Award tickets for travel from the U.S. or Canada can be changed or canceled with no fee and the miles returned, except Basic, according to Delta. That makes it safe to book a good price when it appears.
Taxes
From $11.20 on domestic awards, and up to about $600 on international itineraries with foreign taxes and carrier fees, according to Delta.
Pay with Miles
Delta Amex holders can use miles against fares in 5,000-mile blocks worth $50: at most 1¢ a mile, below the typical 1.2¢.

Dynamic pricing means some dates price far below others. Because cancellation is free from the U.S., booking a good price on sight carries little risk.

- Miles never expire
- TakeOff 15 on the Gold, Platinum and Reserve cards
- Valuable companion certificates on the Platinum and Reserve
Where it falls short
- No chart, and prices can be very high on popular dates
- Only one bank (Amex) transfers in
- Partner awards are often cheaper through Flying Blue or Virgin Atlantic
- Lounge access keeps tightening
The Atelier Take
Delta miles are best earned through the cards and spent quickly on good-value dates; for long-haul premium seats, SkyTeam partners usually book cheaper elsewhere.
