- Description: No award chart, but some of the most forgiving award rules in the U.S. How SkyMiles works in 2026, where the miles still go far, every Delta Amex card, and the lounge rules that changed.

Delta prices awards by demand, with no chart, and its miles carry a typical value of about 1.2¢ each. What Delta offers instead is flexibility. Award tickets from the U.S. or Canada can be canceled with no fee (Basic fares excepted), miles never expire, and the Delta American Express cards add discounts, bags, companion tickets and, for some, lounge access.

## How award prices work

Delta publishes no chart. Its site says award seats are capacity-controlled and that the calendar shows the lowest prices; partner awards on Air France, KLM, Korean Air, Virgin Atlantic and others can be booked on delta.com.

1. TakeOff 15
Delta SkyMiles Gold, Platinum and Reserve cardholders, personal and business, get 15% off Delta-operated award flights booked on delta.com or the Fly Delta app, according to Delta. It does not apply to partner flights or to taxes.
2. Free cancellation
Award tickets for travel from the U.S. or Canada can be changed or canceled with no fee and the miles returned, except Basic, according to Delta. That makes it safe to book a good price when it appears.
3. Taxes
From $11.20 on domestic awards, and up to about $600 on international itineraries with foreign taxes and carrier fees, according to Delta.
4. Pay with Miles
Delta Amex holders can use miles against fares in 5,000-mile blocks worth $50: at most 1¢ a mile, below the typical 1.2¢.

### Flash sales and low-demand dates

Variesno fixed price

Dynamic pricing means some dates price far below others. Because cancellation is free from the U.S., booking a good price on sight carries little risk.

### Companion certificates

The Platinum’s annual Main Cabin companion certificate and the Reserve’s First, Comfort or Main certificate can be worth more than the card’s fee for anyone who would buy that ticket anyway.

Delta can book SkyTeam partners, but Flying Blue or Virgin Atlantic may price the same seats differently; compare both before booking.

## How to earn SkyMiles

1. Transfer from American Express
Membership Rewards transfer at 1:1, plus a small U.S. excise fee of $0.0006 a point (at most $99), according to American Express. No other major bank transfers to Delta.
2. Fly Delta
General members earn 5 miles per dollar on Classic and Refundable fares and 7 on Extra, rising to 11 for Diamond Medallions. Main Basic (Basic Economy) earns no miles, and other Basic fares earn 2 a dollar, according to Delta.
3. Use a Delta card
1x–3x on purchases; the cards’ value is in bags, discounts, companion tickets and lounges.

## The credit cards

All Delta cards are issued by American Express. The Gold, Platinum and Reserve offers end November 4, 2026, according to Delta.

## Medallion status and lounges, briefly

| Tier | Medallion Qualification Dollars | Miles per $ |
| -------- | ------------------------------- | ----------- |
| Silver | $5,000 | 7 |
| Gold | $10,000 | 8 |
| Platinum | $15,000 | 9 |
| Diamond | $28,000 | 11 |

Thresholds are the same for 2026 and 2027, according to Delta. Platinum and Reserve cardholders earn Medallion Qualification Dollars on spending (1 per $20 and 1 per $10) plus a $2,500 head start each year.

Sky Club access in 2026

- **Delta Reserve:** 15 visits a year, unlimited after $75,000 of card spending in a calendar year.
- **Amex Platinum:** 10 visits a year, the same $75,000 route to unlimited.
- A "visit" covers every entry within 24 hours. Basic Economy tickets get no access.
- Neither card opens the **Delta One Lounges**, which need a same-day Delta One ticket.

Where it shines

- No-fee changes and cancellations on U.S.-origin awards
- Miles never expire
- TakeOff 15 on the Gold, Platinum and Reserve cards
- Valuable companion certificates on the Platinum and Reserve

Where it falls short

- No chart, and prices can be very high on popular dates
- Only one bank (Amex) transfers in
- Partner awards are often cheaper through Flying Blue or Virgin Atlantic
- Lounge access keeps tightening

The Atelier Take

Delta miles are best earned through the cards and spent quickly on good-value dates; for long-haul premium seats, SkyTeam partners usually book cheaper elsewhere.
