- Description: The last of the big three U.S. programs with a published partner award chart. How AAdvantage works in 2026, the oneworld seats worth booking, the Citi cards, and status by Loyalty Points.

American prices its own flights dynamically, like United and Delta. The difference is what it kept: a published chart for flights on its oneworld and other partners, including Japan Airlines, Qatar Airways and Cathay Pacific. That chart is why AAdvantage miles carry a typical value of about 1.45¢ each, the highest of the three big U.S. airlines, and why a Citi card that transfers to American has become one of the more useful cards to hold.

- **Off-peak to Europe:** Main Cabin drops to 22,500 on January 10–March 14 and November 1–December 14.
- **Lie-flat domestic flights** add 7,500 miles to business and first prices within North America.
- A one-way trip with **two long-haul flights** needs two awards.

A 2026 caveat

Itineraries that combine a Japan Airlines flight with an American or Alaska connection may not price at the chart. Check the total in American’s award search before transferring points.

## The best uses of AAdvantage miles

Asia Region 1

### Japan Airlines business to Tokyo

60,000miles one-way, on Japan Airlines alone

JAL’s long-haul business class at the chart price. Check the full itinerary’s price in American’s award search before transferring.

Middle East

### Qatar Airways Qsuite

70,000miles one-way to Doha in business

Qatar’s Qsuite on equipped aircraft, at a chart price far below the cash fare. Continuing beyond Doha on a second long-haul flight needs a second award, under American’s rules.

Check aircraft for Qsuite

Asia Region 2

### Cathay Pacific to Hong Kong

70,000miles one-way in business

Cathay’s business class to Hong Kong and onward within Asia Region 2.

Partner space varies by season

Europe

### Europe off-peak

22,500miles one-way in economy

The cheapest transatlantic price on the chart, on off-peak dates. British Airways flights add large surcharges; prefer Iberia or Finnair. American’s own flights are priced separately and can cost more or less.

Off-peak dates only

Northern South America

### South America Region 1

30,000miles one-way in business

Business class to northern South America for little more than a domestic business award.

Strong value

Hawaii

### Hawaii on partners

22,500miles one-way in economy

Partner flights on the chart; American’s own flights to Hawaii are dynamic and can be cheaper or dearer.

Compare both

Free cancellation

American says there are no change fees on award tickets, and miles are redeposited at no charge if canceled before the first flight, within a year of purchase. Holding a good partner award while plans settle costs nothing.

## How to earn AAdvantage miles

1. Transfer from Citi
Citi is the only major bank that transfers to American: 1:1 from the Strata Premier and Strata Elite, about 1:0.7 from Citi’s no-fee cards. Citi names American Airlines as a partner on its own card pages.
2. Use an AAdvantage card
Every AAdvantage card is now issued by Citi, which became the exclusive issuer in 2026, according to American. Card spending also earns Loyalty Points toward status.
3. Fly
Miles on American depend on fare and status; Basic Economy no longer earns miles.
4. Marriott
3:1, with no bonus for American, according to Marriott.

Miles expire after 24 months without activity, according to American’s terms; earning on an AAdvantage card counts as activity.

## Status by Loyalty Points

Status is earned in a qualification year that starts on March 1, according to American. Status is earned with Loyalty Points: one for every eligible mile earned, whether flying, on a card or with partners.

| Tier | Loyalty Points | Bonus miles on flights | Free checked bags |
| ------------------ | -------------- | ---------------------- | ----------------- |
| Gold | 40,000 | 40% | 1 |
| Platinum | 75,000 | 60% | 2 |
| Platinum Pro | 125,000 | 80% | 3 |
| Executive Platinum | 200,000 | 120% | 3 |

Where it shines

- A published partner chart, rare among U.S. airlines
- Excellent partners in business class: JAL, Qatar, Cathay Pacific
- Free cancellation on awards
- Status from card spending via Loyalty Points

Where it falls short

- Only Citi transfers in at full value
- American’s own flights are priced dynamically
- Surcharges on some partners, notably British Airways

The Atelier Take

For Japan, the Middle East and Asia in business class, few U.S. programs match AAdvantage’s partner chart; a Citi Strata card is the key that opens it.
